I’ve had blonde hair for 10+ years, and a few weeks ago I returned to my roots (pun intended), aka back to brunette. I’ve learned a lot about hair care over a few hair disasters (pre my current stylist), and over just being blonde. Being blonde and bleaching your hair can just be so drying! So I want to share some hair care tips and tricks and a few products that have worked amazingly for me.

Healthy Balanced Diet- this is a huge one. Consume your major food groups think about everything green or what you’d find in the garden. Get those nutrients in. Diet and nutrition for healthy hair is so important.
Vitamins- I take an everyday vitamin, biotin, and collagen. Before purchasing please consult a doctor. This is what works for me, and my doctors are aware. Every morning I take my collagen and biotin. The collagen is unflavored so I will usually scoop that into my coffee, tea, or even smoothie.
Hair accessories- I made the switch to these hair ties by Gimme and they have been amazing. One they do not pull at your hair so say farewell to the days of your hair coming out when you take out your hair tie. Two they stay in place. I have thick hair and whether I put my hair in a bun, or ponytail these hair ties ensure my hair stays in place. Another great thing is that these always bounce back for me into the tighter shape. I’ve used my current one for 6+ months and it is still going strong. Which leads me to my next point- I have yet to have one break on me! Another important thing is the hairbrush. I currently use a Wetbrush and it is one of my favorites. When brushing my hair I always make sure to start at the ends for minimal breakage and work my way up. This helps detangle my hair so easily without ripping out a ton of hair. You can use this brush on wet or dry hair.

Less Heat- Less heat is more. I usually let my hair air dry most weeks. Another great alternative if you want to style your hair, is to wait until your hair is about 80% dry before going in and drying it with a tool. Make sure your heat settings are never on high! Another important thing to remember during this step- Don’t forget your heat protectant!!
Silk Pillowcases- I actually just made the switch to silk pillowcases, I bought mine here on Kit-sch. Silk Pillowcases help to take frizz and reduce breakage by creating less friction. It also has some skin benefits too, like helps to reduce breakouts by absorbing less moisture and dirt helps to prevent facial creasing from sleeping. It’s pretty gentle on your skin, hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows too! Another plus this stays cool all night making it great for warm sleepers like myself. I have been obsessed with mine! It really helps keep that matted back-of-the-head look when you wake up to a minimum.
Don’t overwash- This one may be tough for people, but you want to try not to overwash your hair. Believe it or not but those natural oils are actually good for your hair! Overwashing will lead to stripping of your natural oils plus it will leave you more oily. Please read my How to train your hair guide here.
Hair Products- I get asked about what I used when I was blonde, and even now on my hair. These are some of my favorite products that I repurchase over and over.
Shampoo/conditioner- I typically swap out shampoos and conditioners out because I don’t want my hair to get resistant to that. Is that a real thing, who knows- but it works for me. When purchasing shampoo and conditioner this Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Strength + Repair Solutions Set here by Briogeo is my favorite. One it has all you need for your haircare journey but two this shampoo and conditioner will moisturize your hair without leaving it feeling heavy. It really allows my hair to soak up the moisture and feel nourished.
My second favorite shampoo and conditioner is this shampoo and conditioner from Pureology. It’s made specifically for dry color-treated hair. This does have a strong smell, but it really works so well. My hair feels nourished after without feeling heavy or looking greasy.
I am actually also going through another shampoo and conditioner set from Moroccanoil which I can update you all on soon.

Oil- Using hair oil adds moisture to your hair and helps prevent hair breakage and split ends. Some oils can also help with shine and detangles. I have been using this Ghost Oil from Verb for years. It helps to hydrate, strengthen, and smooth strands for shiny, frizz-free hair. I have also tested this Bonding Hair Oil from Olaplex for a few weeks. This oil is ultra-lightweight, reparative, styling oil that increases shine, softness, and color vibrancy while minimizing flyaways and protecting hair against heat damage. This oil has made my hair feel super soft, like I texted my hairdresser about my amazing results, and really helps with my flyaways even in this summer humidity.
Leave-in conditioner- I have gone through so many bottles of this Detangling and Frizz Fighting Leave-In Conditioner by OUAI. It is a leave-in conditioner that detangles hair and protects against heat and damage to reduce frizz and flyaways. I use this on my wet hair before I brush through it. I feel like this product has done a fantastic job at helping me detangle my hair.
Hair masks- This Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Hair Mask from Briogeo here is great to help strengthen damaged hair and help prevent future damage. I also love the Be Gentle, Be Kind™ Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfoods Hair Mask here to help boost moisture for more hydrated hair. This mask smells delicious!
Heat Protectant- I am currently using this Heat Protectant Spray from OUAI. I’m not sure if I am in love with it. But heat protectants are so crucial for your hair, especially if you use hot tools. Heat protectant spray adds a protective layer to your hair, which helps keep it safe from the heat produced by styling tools.
Detox shampoo- With all of the stuff we put on our hair, our hair needs a good detox once in a while. While I use this once a month, or once every other month using a detox shampoo is great. I like this Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Triple Detox Shampoo from Living Proof. It is a detoxifying shampoo that gently yet effectively removes buildup from products, pollution, and hard water for softer, more manageable hair. When I use this product my hair feels so clean, light, and refreshing. Just be careful not to overdo it as it can be drying to your hair.
All these tips and tricks and product recommendations will not help your hair grow or become healthy overnight. But these are tips and products worth looking into. Please remember to be kind to yourself during your haircare journey, we have all been there.
