MY WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY AND DECISION TO JOIN WEIGHT-WATCHERS.

Growing up, I was always on the curvy side, not overweight, but people resembled my body type to JLO’s which truthfully I did not mind LOL. Well fast forward to 23. At the age of 23 I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy. My first thought was I’ll get so thin! No gluten, that sounds great.

Yeah, I did drop weight. I wasn’t eating much processed foods. I hated all “gluten-free items” that I found. But I was on a mission to find good gluten free alternatives. Then I realized that all of the gluten free items contained so many ingredients, and was so much more unhealthy. But, I was young, and working out a few times a month did just the trick.

When I turned 25 I realized my body was changing, my metabolism started changing. What I could eat before without gaining weight, I couldn’t do anymore. At the age of 25 everything just changes! That plus I was put on a medication that made it very easy to gain weight.

Now I’m 27, and New Jersey is on quarantine. I’ve been home for about 2 months. I was munching away on chips, chocolate and a whole lot of wine. During this time I noticed I put on weight, but thought it was just 2 or 3 pounds. I felt my clothes being to feel a little snug. I was constantly stretching out my clothes by tugging on them to get a looser fit because I was just not comfortable with it. Then just last weekend I stepped on the scale to see how many pounds I gained. I went for a few walks during the week and thought, I’d be fine. But when I looked down I saw a number that I never saw before. A number I was not comfortable with. And then I decided to take things into my own hands.

It’s not so much about the number that is on the scale for me. It is about how I feel. I want to feel comfortable and confident in my body and in my clothes. That is the most important thing to me.

I started counting calories. I feel like I do this every few months. I’ll count, get to my ideal weight, and start feeling comfortable and then stop. I realized, that it may not be the best fit for me. So instead I researched Weight Watchers. Then, I decided let me try it out.

So let me get the basics of weight watchers (WW for short) down. WW is not a “diet” they stress that they are instead, a lifestyle change which is what I like. They allow you to eat what you want or crave but in moderation. They focus on portion control.

There are different plans on weight watchers. They have digital, which is online only, then they have digital + virtual workshops (it is virtual for now but it is usually held in person- but because of COVID19 they are hosting meetings online). Lastly, they have digital + personalized coaching. This is where you get your own coach.

I am using just the digital version.

They have 3 different plans, a green, blue and purple. When you get started you take a quiz and it determines a color plan for you. They determine it by weight and height. I am on WW green plan.

You then get daily “points” instead of calories. So instead of tracking calories I am tracking points. You get a minimum of 30 points on the WW green plan. I get 30 daily points. Vegetables and fruits are free of points, as is 1/4 cup of egg whites! (This is on the green plan, other plans have more zero/free point foods.)

So beside daily points you get “weekly points”. Basically, “weeklies” are a cushion. I get 42 extra points a week, that they dip into if I go over my daily points. So for instance, Cinco de Mayo, I went over 4 points because I really wanted a margarita. Well, I got to have my margarita by dipping into my “weeklies”. Your weeklies are there for you as a cushion. I like to save my weeklies for a special treat, or occasion. Like on mother’s day I used my weekly points and I am saving this weeks weekly points for my mom’s birthday. You can use up all your weeklies and still loose weight! So you don’t have to deprive yourself.

You also get “fit points” which is if you workout for a certain amount of minutes (it works if you pair a device) and burn a certain amount of calories. They have a special formula to figure out your fit point goal. My weekly fit point goal is 17 because I work a desk job and it’s hard to work 8-5, workout, and do my blog, youtube, instagram etc. (that is like a second job) plus have a social life.

Right now I have my WW app set up so I use my daily points, then my weeklies. I do not take from my fit points. I let them be and just treat them like they don’t exist. But you can adjust your app to use your daily, then fit, then weekly, or daily, weekly then fit, or have it set up like I do which is just the daily then weekly!

Once a week is weigh in day. My weigh in day is Monday. Your weekly and fit points reset on your weigh in day. I like this because it is like starting fresh. You can also adjust your weigh in day. So you can adjust your weigh in day to another day if you need to reset your points sooner or later. I don’t recommend doing this, but some people say it’s helpful so they can go over on their own terms.

You also get “rollovers”. So everyday you have your points. Let’s say you have 30 daily points and if one day you don’t eat all of those points, and you just eat 25, you have 5 points left over. 4 out of those 5 points will roll into your “weekly”. They only rollover a maximum of 4 points. You can roll over points daily if you have them left over! It just means more points in your “weekly” bank.

On the app they also have a a section where you can talk to a coach 24/7. I have used this before and they answer! It is like texting! I love how convenient it is.

Truthfully, I like the idea of having points and free veggies and fruits. Seeing the 30 points daily is less stressful than seeing calories! Plus it’s fun trying to find low breakfast, lunch and snack options! I often use most of my points for dinner so I can still eat what the rest of my family eats. I also like how WW, unlike other diets encourages you to eat what you want. Going out Thursday night with your friends? Or want that wine on Friday? Just plan your week, save points, or use your weekly points. Any food is an option and clean eating is encouraged.
