Lip Liner Tips

Truthfully lip liner is the one part of makeup that I was never really taught. I never knew there were tips or tricks or a right way to apply! I just did it. But over the past year I learn some do’s and don’ts, tips and tricks and wanted to share them with you all!

Liner shouldn’t be a lot darker than your lipstick. NEVER EVER!
Liner should be about one shade darker then your natural lip color, or a shade darker or lighter than the lip product you are using. Otherwise the blending will be too harsh!

Don’t overdraw your lip
It know it’s a trend, and can be done tastefully, but don’t go overboard! You can outline your lips every so slightly outside your regular shape for a little extra pout! Overdrawing will result in your lips looking very fake.

Play with your Cupid’s Bow.
Make a defined outline here, and then add a pop of highlight for an extra touch! I love doing this! It really adds a nice pop and glow to your face.

Liner can be used as color.
Line your lips and fill them in with the same liner for a matte or creamy look. Use some gloss to add some shine.

Work at a 45-degree angle.
Hold your liner at a 45 degree angle so it’s easier to glide across your lips. Don’t apply too much pressure because it will look super harsh against your lipstick. If you have to press hard to achieve color payoff with the liner it’s time to toss it!

Use contrasting shades for a fuller pout.
I actually learned that this year! I love outlining my lips with a darker (only a shade) lip liner, defining my cupid’s bow and the middle of my bottom lip, then apply a lighter gloss, cream or liquid lipstick on top and blend it all out.

There are clear pencils
If you don’t like the idea of outlining your lip with a colored liner, then go ahead and use a clear one to make sure your gloss or lipstick stays in place.

Build a guideline starting at your cupid’s bow.
I love starting off with my cupid’s bow. I apply a little “x” to start off and then go from there! I like working in small sections rather than doing my whole lip!

Lip Liner Prolongs The Wear of Any Lip Color
Lip liner helps to prevent lipstick from bleeding, or feathering. It also helps it stay on longer. The trick is to line and fill your lips with your lip liner, then put color on top. The liner gives the color something to adhere to, making it stay on even longer.
