I recently have been testing out the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Water Gel. I used to go tanning often, but as I have gotten older I cut back on tanning (I basically never do now) and now opt to use self tanners at home. One of my favorite things to do is to self tan at home!
So I decided to test out the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Water Gel. It retails for $44 USD.
When I first saw this I thought, oh man, it’s clear and it’s supposed to give me a nice glow/tan? Heck yes sign me up!

Here is some background information on the water gel:
*I got this off of Ulta*
It has a clear and lightweight gel-to-water formula that develops into a natural, golden tan in just 3 hours. With no need to rinse off, this tropically scented, non-sticky and fast-absorbing gel provides up to 72hrs hydration, for a longer lasting and more even tan.
Benefits:
- Result: A natural Looking Medium Golden Glow
- The transparent tan with a tropical scent
- Infused with natural skincare actives and hyaluronic acid to plump, regenerate & protect the skin
- Streak-free and easy-to-apply with a light sheen to guide application
- No stickiness or transfer
- 94% of users agreed the gel format makes it easier to apply the tan
- Vegan-friendly & made with 100% naturally derived tanning active
Steps:
Step 1: Exfoliate 24 hours prior to use. Moisturize dry areas including hands, elbows, knees, ankles, feet and any light hair.
Step 2: For best results, apply to skin using Tan Applicator Mitt in upward circular motions, ensuring all areas are covered. Finally, lightly glide the excess gel on your Mitt over hands and feet. The product gives a light gleam to guide your application and ensure no missed patches.
Step 3: Wait until touch dry before getting dressed. No need to rinse off. You will see a glow after 3 hours, but before getting skin wet, allow 8 hours for your natural looking tan to fully develop.
Step 4: To prolong and maintain your tan, moisturize daily, exfoliate regularly and reapply as required.
Precautions:
Carry out a patch test 24 hours prior to use. Wash palms after use. Self/ Gradual/ Instant tan may stain. Do not apply to sensitive, broken or irritated skin. Stop if irritation occurs. Do not get in eyes, if you do rinse well with water. Avoid contact with lips. Store below 30°C/86°F. Sun Safety: This product does not contain a sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn. Repeated exposure of unprotected skin while tanning may increase the risk of skin ageing, skin cancer and other harmful effects to the skin even if you do not burn.
Ingredients:
Aqua (Water/ Eau), Dihydroxyacetone, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Butylene Glycol, Glycereth-26, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Ethoxydiglycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Saccharide Isomerate, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Fruit Extract, Sodium Metabisulfite, Parfum (Fragrance), Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Linalool, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit Juice, Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Lactic Acid.
My Thoughts:
I have tested out a lot of self tanners over the years, and a lot from St. Tropez but truthfully this is just not it for me.
I did like how it applied, it was very easy to apply, went on smooth, and rubbed into my skin very nicely. It didn’t leave me greasy, or sticky. It also dried down very fast. I also did enjoy the fragrance. It was not too intense of a smell. It went away after a few minutes. It left my skin feeling super moisturized.
I actually really like the consistency of this too! I haven’t used a water gel as a self tanner before but I do love it. There is no color guard ( a color guard is so you can see where you can see where you applied the tanner- looks like bronzer) but it just feels so cool to the skin and is just so moisturizing.
I do know this is supposed to give you a nice medium glow, but I actually did not get any color at all! I actually even used this at my palest ( so pale my foundations don’t match!!) but I didn’t get a glow, didn’t get a tint, I got nothing!! I left this on for 8 hours, slept in it and showered in the morning and still no color! I was actually super shocked because so many people on Ulta love it! I tried this a few times and still did not see any color each time.
I know there are other self tanners that work so much better, and apply nice, don’t streak, smell nice, moisturize my skin. So I feel like you can save your money and get another self tanner!
Have any of you tried this? If you have let me know how it works for you.
